I entered the world of self-employment with some trepidation at first, but I have learned to stop stressing so much. I now understand it is better to learn as much as possible to make things easier when the time comes to do so. I went from working alone to now running a business offering professional tax software to thousands of people across the country. Most people choose to locate their business in a large city, but thanks to the Internet and the ability to reach many customers, I chose to go back to where I grew up in a small, rural town to start my business instead.
Years ago, you needed the ability to have your company located in an area where there are many people living so that people can easily find you. Often, people would find you based on your location within a city or through word of mouth. Now, people find me online and through word of mouth. I chose to run the company in my old hometown because there are not a lot of jobs available to people there. Now that the business has grown, I take pride in the fact that I have 500 employees who work for me in a variety of capacities.
I have two sons who are in college, and both of them have expressed interest in working for me. It has been my hope that one or both of them will one day want to take over the business and keep it going so that I can retire. Not only do I take pride in the fact that we offer software that people need, it is also important to me that the people in this rural area have a job that they can come to that gives them a source of pride as well.
